Embassy Finally Going Condo

This is news to me. If you know what's going on, please let me know. The Embassy Apartment residents denied an attempted condo conversion --maybe 4 or 5 years ago-- but looks like this is happening for real now. The economy and District laws prevented the then owners from converting at the time. Essentially, they had waited too long to act on the original paperwork. Maybe they refiled. I don't know. Curious to find out though.

Hopefully the apartment renters are either getting a decent chance to put in offers or getting generous buyouts.

Beautiful building. Just gorgeous. 1613 Harvard Street NW. I consider that Mount Pleasant. For reasons that are not hard to guess, the new Embassy website references Adams Morgan as the location and notes that the building is "just two blocks from Columbia Heights Metro," while "Capitol Hill and the Central Business District are minutes away." No mention at all of Mount Pleasant. Not a selling point I guess. Sad. Anyway, good luck to the new resident. You'll love our neighborhood, too. Promise.

I currently live in the Embassy in a 2-bedroom. They buyout they offered us was something like 50k off of $450,000. Definitely a little too steep for my entry-level salary.

I'm going to miss living in such a gorgeous building. Anyone have any recommendations for similar apartments in the Mt. Pleasant area?

Bummer. Isn't there some sort of law so renters are not screwed over? I have moved quite a bit since moving to DC and it's hard to find a nice place on a budget.

These condo's at 526 Kenyon are priced for households under 80% AMI. It's not Mount Pleasant, but the area's changing, especially along 11th Street.

There are laws, and the tenants might have done a better job organizing and fighting back.

As for cheaper places, my only suggestion is that since they are disappearing without a fight, people organize for affordable housing. Otherwise, WELCOME TO ANNANDALE!

(Which way to the Metro?)

they did put up quite a fight several years ago, i believe culminating in 2005. and the tenants won that round.

it is not illegal to convert an apartment into a condo. perhaps it should be harder, but it is within the rights of the owner, unfortunaltey for renters.

Yes, I know that it is legal. But tenants have a lot of rights under the current system, and if exercised properly can get quite a lot. Good to hear they banded together in 05. Too bad about now. There goes more affordable housing in DC.
