Hip Hop Chess Tourney Returns for 10th Year

Words, Beats & Life is hosting the 10th Annual Bum Rush the Boards Chess Tournament. This is just one of the many events and initiatives organized and run by WB&L. Words, Beats & Life is a DC non-profit that uses aspects of hip hop culture to teach artistic and life skills. The chess event is this weekend in Columbia Heights, but check out the many other events here.

From the organizers:

"10 years ago, we decided to further bridge the gap between Hip-Hop and education through our first ever Hip-Hop chess tournament. Young chess players, their teammates, friends and families walked through our door to a room full of others just like them and a table covered by trophies awaiting their champion.

On Saturday, November 14th, D.C. Hip-Hop nonprofit, Words Beats & Life Inc., will host the 10th Anniversary of Bum Rush the Boards Hip-Hop chess tournament at the Columbia Heights Recreation Center from 10am-4pm.

While chess players are going head to head, we’ll keep you entertained with free Hip-Hop workshops like Bboy/Bgirl, Graffiti, DJ’ing and so much more.

Registration for a full day of competition is only $10 for young kings and queens of all skill levels. Those supporting or just passing by can also enjoy the food, workshops, and an all-around fun-filled afternoon for free.

Join us on the 14th to learn what the #ScienceofDope is really about.
