The answers, from the organizers:

1. The house was known as the Mt. Pleasant House and was once inhabited by politician William Jennings Bryan--known for being a prohibitionist, an anti-imperialist, a failed presidential candidate and a participant in the Scopes "Monkey" trial. In its place at the corner of 13th and Clifton Streets, NW (Columbia Heights) stands the Highview/Castle Manor apartment buildings. If you look at the building now, it seems some of the original retaining wall is intact. The "view" of the Highview is a great panorama of the city--the top of that hill on 13th Street is the only spot in the city where you can naturally see both the Capitol and the Washington Monument at the same time!

2. The dinosaur is Uncle Beazley, who was created for a TV show, then came to the Zoo. He moved a few times--first to the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum and then the Museum of Natural History--but is back at the Zoo again.

3. The last photo is of "Resurrection City" from the Poor People's Campaign. Organized by Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1967, the movement aimed to bring attention to economic inequality and demand an economic bill of rights and action from the government to help the poor. In 1968, a month after King's assassination, the campaign started a protest in DC and thousands of people encamped on the Mall. Resurrection City lasted for 6 weeks.

I am not talking about complicated pastry from India/ Germany/ Caribbean etc.

But just bagels, bagets, breads. Simple things that we can all look forward to being baked fresh everyday. I would wake up at 5 in the am for that!

i got one piece done by a nice lady at tattoo paradise, she was very nice but i think it has a few minor flaws. still, i think i would recommend them. i used to always go to ms d out at metro tattoo, which merged with great southern and now i can never get an appointment. she is amazing, in my opinion. now i go to susan at jinx proof -- she is amazing, and although a bit pricey, totally amazing.
when i worked in grassroots community organizations, having tattoos was a plus, but working for an international ngo downtown now, i am supposed to cover my tattoos particularly for meetings with government types. no big deal.

I'm a relatively young lawyer at a firm downtown. A group of partners actually had a discussion because a couple of them have late teen/early 20s kids who are getting into tattoos. They certainly aren't opposed to the idea in principle. I have some ink around my shoulder, but I won't be getting any "always out" tattoos for now. Something tells me that in the legal field, that's not going to change anytime soon.

I look at this new limited residential project from a different standpoint. While these types of Construction projects in Massachusetts can be difficult for homeowners looking for affordable housing, it is a great thing for the construction workers, like myself. With the current economic troubles there just isn't enough work to go around and everyone in the industry could really use a helping hand. Luckily a friend recommended Dodge Projects and they are the perfect helping hand. They have detailed job listings that are sorted by state and type. It makes it so easy to see which jobs are right for you. i definitely recommend them. You should check it out.

@dc_chica - if they are leasing more than 25-30 units per month then they are probably at the right price/incentive point. It's not Simcity. An new apartment building isn't going to lease 300+ units overnight.

An apartment building in my neighborhood (425 Mass NW) less than 1 mile west is leasing at roughly the same price point. They are leasing about 45 units per month. When interviewed by the WBJ the corporate owners only expected to lease 25 per month.

Yikes, I checked out the webpage for Flats 130 and studio apartments are renting for $1800-$2000, 1 BRs are $2000+, and 2 BRs are $3000+. I agree that it would be nice for the neighborhood to provide more housing options than luxury condos but given NOMA's proximity to downtown (theoretically NOMA will be transformed into something like the existing K St NW corridor), I think any new construction is destined to be expensive (cost of land + cost of construction = $$$$$). Btw, Flats 130 is offering rent specials like 1 month free rent, so unless other commenters have some info that I don't, I do not think they have leased to capacity (or expect to)at their current rates.

If the apartments are leasing at a good velocity then they are market rate.

I think Jason's comments could have been a little less caustic. But I agree with him that those expecting *new construction* in prime locations to be priced at work force market rates (or whatever you want to coin it) are unrealistic.

It's better too focus on his salient point how demand being satisfied by these rentals keeps the market in better equilibrium. Without new construction residential demand will outstrip the supply of people who want to sell and prices of older housing/apartments will accelerate even faster.
