Apartment Houses: Kalorama Park

Kalorama Park is a newer apartment house, having opened in 2004. It's located at 1840 Columbia Road NW in Adams Morgan. The top four floors have apartments, with three on each floor. Being only one of 12 units, each apartment is fairy large; and most likely expensive. They're 1,200-1,300 square feet each and all units are two bed-two bath. I'm guessing rents would be between $3,000 and $3,500 per month.

The first floor was originally slated for a white table cloth restaurant with outdoor seating, but high end furniture retailer Design Within Reach ended up occupying that space. There is second floor retail space, occupied by Counter Culture Coffee training facility (cuppings, etc). Annnnnnnyyyyy chance you've lived here? If you live there now, take me on the sweet roofdeck please!

This new retail and apartment building at 1836, 1838, 1840 Columbia Road, NW was built by the late Anastasio Hiotis. His name is inscribed in Greek letters across the top of the front facade of the building.

This six story building above ground has an additional three levels of underground parking and a common full length and full width roof top terrace for The Kalorama Park Apartment Building, 1840 Columbia Road, NW.

Despite this, most of these rented apartments remain vacant. Most of the windows never have any lights on since built as you can see in the picture above. The widow lives in the building managed by the two sons.

Forty years ago there was a finely decorated, white table cloth, high end restaurant called the Latin Q where the furniture store is now when the property was a single story commercial building.

Where the entrance door to the new rental apartments is now, Embassy Barber Shop was at 1840 Columbia Road, NW through the 1960's and through 1974 until evicted by Paul S. Tauber when he bought the property in 1974 and he started Columbia Station Restaurant and Bar (presently around the corner at 2325 18th Street, NW).

And unfortunately the owner and his mother (the widow) have become two of the most vocal critics of nightlife in Adams Morgan.

I remember the space as Mr Henrys. As a very long time resident of AM, I hate that new development. It is a soulless addition which actually ends up as a subtraction. Did not NECESSARILY have to be that way. But that building looks shoddy, overpriced and, well let me just stop now. Good luck and have fun getting in.
