Out of curiosity I recently clicked on the New York Times 36 Hours in Washington DC Travel page, wanting to know what a conspicuous New Yorker would be steered towards in our fair city. Not surprisingly, the monuments, memorials and museums made an appearance in the guide. However, only after some other Washington tourist spots like a trip to the roof of Hotel Washington and Penn Quarter's restaurant row. Surprisingly the author mentioned a late night trip to 9:30 Club to catch a show, after dinner on U Street.
The only other non downtown neighborhood the author mentioned was Georgetown; not a surprise. He also recommended seeing the monuments at night, which I also like. The Museums he specifically mentioned were National Portrait Gallery, American Art, National Gallery of Art and the Spy Museum.

So, if you had to give a visiting friend a 36 hours in DC guide, what would you include?
I'll take your suggestions and use them to make a Day-and-a-Half in DC page and post it on the blog.
