New Downtown Farmers Market

There is a new farmers market operating in downtown DC. The City Center development is now hosting a farmers market operated by FRESHFARM. The market is every Tuesday from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm. I went yesterday and there was about a 50/50 split between fresh produce stands and prepared food/product stands. The market is located in the new plaza at the corner of 10th and I (Eye) Streets NW. It's only a few blocks from the Penn Quarter Market (also FRESHFARM) which opens Thursday at 8th and E Sts NW.

Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market Begins Tomorrow!

Doh! I was wrong when I suggested that the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market would begin in a few weeks. It begins tomorrow, April 5

The market operates every Saturday from April 5 - December 20 this year. The hours are 9AM - 1PM. The location is Lamont Park, at the intersection of Mount Pleasant Street NW (3200 block) and Lamont Street NW.

This year's market kicks off with long time personal favorites Reid's Orchard and local friends Pleasant Pops, among many others. The forecast is partly cloudy and 64 degrees. Great market weather. See you there!

Penn Quarter Farmers' Market Returns

Tomorrow is April 1, more than one month since the start of meteorological spring. There are plenty of milestones for the seasonal switch-over like baseball's opening day, packing winter jackets away, and blooming cherry blossoms. Another welcome sign: the return of outdoor farmers' markets to DC neighborhoods.

Mount Pleasant's market won't start for a few more weeks days, but the Penn Quarter Freshfarm Market reopens this Thursday, April 3, 2014. The PQ Market is located on 8th St NW between D and E Sts. The dates this year are Thursdays, April 3 - December 18. The hours are 3PM - 7PM. It's easily accessible from Mount P via 42 bus or Green &Yellow Lines (Archives).

Farmers' Market Opens Tomorrow

One of the best Saturdays of the year: opening day for the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market. The market operates each Saturday 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM from tomorrow until December 21, 2013.

Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market Opening Earlier

The Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market is opening on April 6, 2013. That's nearly one month earlier than the 2012 opening, which was on May 5th. The Market will run to December 21, 2013. The Market also extended its run into mid December last year, which I gather was well received. The hours remain the same, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM each Saturday. The location is Lamont Park at the corner of Lamont and Mt Pleasant Sts NW (3200 block of Lamont).

Get excited! Now if  we can get this weather to agree with the scheduling...

Mt. Pleasant Farmers' Market Extended Into December

Good news for fans of the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market: the market has decided to extend its calendar this year. Instead of closing after the November 17th market, there will be five additional markets; including the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Please go out and support the farmers and other producers! The new last day for the market will be Saturday December 22.

FYI -- On December 22, 2011, the high temperature in DC was 62 degrees. The low was 43. Not too bad. If we can get a repeat of that weather, all the better. Good luck, farmers!

Return of the Mt Pleasant Farmers' Market

Happy Friday! And Happy early Saturday. Get ready for summer and the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market. The first market of the season is tomorrow from 9:00AM-1:00PM.... and each Saturday until November 17, 2012.

(You know, I almost wrote "Return of the Mack" for the title of this post. But, I caught myself. Anywaaaaay....)

This week look for bagels (Atwater's), strawberries, apples, mushrooms, homemade ginger ale (People's Bao) and asparagus. Bikers; bring your bikes, the Bike Clinic will be open, too.

If it's your first time, come to Lamont Park, 3200 Mount Pleasant St NW. About 5 blocks from Columbia Heights Metro station and accessible via the 42, S, H and Circulator buses. See you there!

And since I was thinking about it, Return of the Mack! Have a great weekend.

Thrive DC at White House Market

Here's a cool event happening today.

Thrive DC will be at the Freshfarm  Market by the White House to announce a cool partnership with DC based Zipcar. You can of course attend the market and pick up some local, good-for-you vegetables. But in addition you'll be able to sign up and help Thrive DC with it's mission: providing wide ranging, diverse services to DC's homeless population.

Thrive DC is working with Zipcar to deliver donated goods to where they need to be across DC and you can volunteer to help out as well. Not sure of the details regarding logistics, but Zipcar will encourage members to use its cars to deliver donated materials and food to Thrive DC locations/offices. If you're interested, ask about the arrangement at the market.

You can also bring items that Thrive DC consistently needs: travel sized toiletries, new unworn undergarments and new unworn socks. Enjoy the market and help out a great DC organization as well.

The Freshfarm Market at the White House is located at 810 Vermont Ave NW, b/t H and I Sts. It happens on Thursdays from 3-7PM. Visit with Thrive DC and Zipcar from 4-6PM.

Farmers' and Flea Markets Make for a Swell Weekend

Late fall scene at Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market
Finally...... the farmers' market..... has come back..... TO MOUNT PLEASANT! Yes, tomorrow is the first day of the best farmers market in the city, the Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market. Happens every Saturday morning, now until November 19. I can't wait. I still remember the last items I bought in 2010: a  few pink lady apples and a quart of apple cider.

What will I get tomorrow? Who knows, just want to be there thinking about the start to real spring in DC, a beautiful time of year. The Mount Pleasant Farmers' Market is tomorrow May 7, from 9:00AM until 1:00PM. The location is Lamont Park at the corner of Lamont and Mount Pleasant Sts NW. See you...

*     *     *

Also tomorrow, just 4 blocks from the Farmers' Market, is the Positive Force Punk Rock Flea Market and Skill Share. That's a mouth full, but basically, it's like it sounds: a market made of DIY vendors and talented folks willing to share their knowledge and skillz with you (word is Warm and Fuzzies will be there!). Afterwards, a show with three DC bands: Deleted Scenes, Foul Swoops and America Hearts (I believe from Mt P?). The flea and skill share start at 12:30PM and the music starts at 2:00PM. The location is St. Stephens Church at 1525 Newton St NW (at 16th). That's two awesome events on one day. Have a great weekend!

Thanks to the Farmers

Thanks to the farmers who traveled to DC weekly this year for the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market. The market ran from May 1 until last Saturday, November 20. I was sad, as I am every year! Picked up about a week's worth of apples, half gallon of cider, a rosemary loaf of bread and head of broccoli. I wanted to buy a lot more, but I guess buying food in excess and then not using it is frowned upon in this establishment. First week of May 2010, hurry please! Farmers, until then, peace!

Final Farmer's Market This Saturday

A massive THANK YOU to the Mount Pleasant farmer's market vendors and organizers. For nearly seven months a year they provide fresh food from nearby farms (and kitchens) at great prices. I've been 85% of the weeks this year? Something like that. Loving the collards and chard lately. And apple juice. Also made regular purchases of grapes, fresh baked vegan bread, arugula, cauliflower, beets, huge peaches and red potatoes. All grown at one of a dozen or so farms located within 125 miles of DC.

Along with a few new vendors, new this there was a bike repair station and clinic. Live music was played almost every week and generally Saturday morning was a good chance make that regular appointment to see friends who live in the neighborhood. And those who come here from outside of the neighborhood.

The Dupont Market, which is year round, will have to hold me over until next year. The Mount Pleasant Market runs from the first Saturday in May until the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Till next year.

Keeping Tabs: Another Mt P Street Vacancy and New Farmer's Market

**Another Mount Pleasant Street business is gone. The Mount Pleasant Deli closed earlier this summer. It was at the bottom of the street, at 3068 Mount Pleasant Street NW, between Mayflower and Ercilia's. I wasn't a frequent visitor, but I often saw customers inside. They served sandwiches and other prepared other hot food as well as acted as a small convenience store.

**Rockville, New York... DC? Rockville, MD just passed a fairly restrictive no-smoking ban. Previously you were not allowed to smoke outside while at Rockville city facilities like dog parks and pools. The new measure amends the current policy to include playgrounds as well. Smoking was already banned inside hotels, bars and restaurants. New York City officials are also considering a similar law, banning smoking in its city parks and on its beaches. Rockville, NYC, why not DC. Let's do it.

**The "White House Farmer's Market" was just approved. Rather the street closures upon which it was predicated were approved. The market will be less than a block from the 42 bus route on Vermont Avenue NW between H and I Streets. Every Thursday 3pm-7pm beginning this Thursday September 17th.

**A handful of conservative bloggers (and others) got punked into publishing a fake photo of the anti-Obama gatherings in DC last weekend. Somehow a photo of a previous protest on the mall was circulated and captioned as last weekend's protest. Too bad the photo was taken years ago; the National Museum of the American Indian isn't in it, as it was not yet built. Common sense people. Use common sense. Easy. Not hard. Clowns.

Farmer's Market Starts Saturday

Finally! Must be spring if the Mt Pleasant farmer's market is starting. And the first one is this Saturday. The market is held at Lamont Park, right next to the first stop of the 42 bus, in the heart of Mount Pleasant. It's every Saturday from 9am-1pm. The final market is a ways off, in November. Trying not to think about that day right now. Focusing on tomorrow...

A few changes, some good, some meh. From Mount Pleasant Main Street:

New this year: A free weekly drop-in bike clinic; yeasted breads from Atwater Bread of Baltimore; Cherry Glen Goat Cheese Company from Boyds, Maryland; humanely raised goat meat and veal from Painted Hand Farm; and more.

Bikes, yea! Veal, why??? I'm definitely bummed about that. Was there a market for veal? At the farmer's market? I'm confused. Well, up the veggies. And up the bikes. See you there.

May 1st, Please

Well, actually, May 3rd. Its the day the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market re-opens at Lamont Park. After spending today in two grocery stores, Giant and the P Street Whole Foods, I got even more excited about the Market. I was totally uninspired by either selection of produce and went home without any fresh fruits or vegetables (even though, typically, Whole Foods somehow got 50 dollars of mine for an almost-bag-full of other items). The five months of the year that the Market is idle make for for long Saturday's. I'll finally have a reason to get out of the house early again. And the farmers are so nice and all local (yes, even from Pennsylvania!). A few more weeks...

Last Farmer's Market of the Season This Saturday

This Saturday, November 17th marks the end of the seasonal Mount Pleasant Farmer's Market. The market runs May through November. So, come on out and support the local producers who've become a part of our neighborhood. No more fresh apples and pears for me for a while... Until next year! Thanks local farmers!

Dupont Circle Farmer's Market

Although I couldn't quite shake the feeling that I was cheating on the Mt Pleasant Farmer's Market (Saturdays 10A-1P), I quite enjoyed today's Market at Dupont. The Dupont Circle Farmer's Market is located just yards away form the 42 bus route. Just hop off at the Q St stop. The market runs along 20th Street behind the PNC Bank building. Nice weather today made for some beautiful photos. The market runs every Sunday YEAR ROUND. Yes, even January to March!
