Alberto's Out, Smoothie King In

Lots of Adams Morgan moves recently.

Alberto's was on of those half-reputable pizza places that was probably lumped in with the jumbo slice purveyors by passers-by, or at least by me. I don't know when exactly Alberto's closed, but they are indeed closed as of this week. 

The storefront, at 2438 18th St NW, will be filled by  Smoothie King, now in its fourth NW neighborhood. Gallery Place and Dupont each has a store, as does the food court of the Reagan Building (1300 Pennsylvania Ave). Smoothie King was founded in the 1960s and now relies on a franchising model to expand to new markets. They're actively looking to expand in DC as well as the states of Maryland and Virginia.

Good to have add variety on the strip. With pizza, falafel, schawarma, empanadas and more, there are plenty of choices for hand held, cheap foods in a neighborhood mostly known for bars and restaurants. Add smoothies to that list. I imagine they'll do just fine.

Smoothie King Actually Open Now. Really.

The Penn Quarter Smoothie King was open. Then it wasn't. Shortly after I published this post about the new addition to the Gallery Place complex, it opened for one day. Then it abruptly closed and has just now reopened earlier this week. Apparently, the franchise owner had a miscommunication with the corporate parent and wasn't supposed to open quite so soon. No loss though. Its open now and the smoothies are pretty much what you'd expect if you've ever been to one of these chain stores before. Will probably give Camille's a run for my smoothie money.

The address is 703 7th Street NW, across from Sushi Go-Round and Clyde's on the Walk.

Smoothie King Coming to Gallery Place Arcade

Gallery Place arcade, the narrow space between Gallery Place building and the Verizon Center, is getting a new tenant. In a revelation my coworker called "super-sensational smoothie news," Smoothie King will soon Join Clyde's on the Walk, Sushi-Go-Round and Häagen-Dazs. The Smootie King will be located in a stand alone rental space on the south side of the arcade. The stand alone spaces are adjacent to a Chipotle and have been sparsely occupied over the years. I remember a small gift shop occupying one and a flowershop another. There hasn't been a business in either of the spaces for quite a while.

The Smoothie King (actual address 703 7th Street NW) will likely be a franchise, but all the establishments have an identical menu. A few dozen smoothies, smothie "enchacers," and health bars make up the offerings. Any luck and it'll open before summer is over.

I had been getting smoothies at Camille's. Anyone know of other smoothie options in Gallery Place or Penn Quarter?
