Asylum Due for Major Changes

One of my favorite Adams Morgan bars is headed for massive "back to the future"-like changes. Asylum Rock and Roll Lounge, which is 20 years young as of 2011, will revert back to a one level basement bar, giving up the top floor to another entity. It is located at 2471 18th St NW.

It originally opened as a one level basement bar, and although I've heard it referred to as a "biker bar" by various people over the years, it's really just a venue that tries to bring something a little different to the maddening AM bar scene.  They have a decent selection of vegan food, serve a popular weekend brunch, have oddball movie nights (Parker Posey, Wes Anderson), started an alterna-speed dating night and hosted regular parties like "Reform School" (Catholic school girls, etc) and "Shorts" (admission meant wearing shorts--or less). Of all the bars on 18th St NW, I feel most at home here.

However, those events were made possible by presence of an upstairs portion of the bar, which was added more than 10 years after the original downstairs bar opened and more than doubled the capacity. Although the vegan friendly weekend brunch originated while Asylum was downstairs only, it really flourished in the upstairs, often resulting in long waits for a table and a full bar right at opening. A great scene. Gone are the days of Tuesday vegan happy hour, but it had a great run as well.

It's unclear if the venue that takes over the upper floor space will be related to Asylum in any way; owners, managers, workers. I don't know. But the loss of a performance space and seats for vegan food are a total bummer for me, personally. One of my first forays into Adams Morgan as a Washingtonian was into Asylum's dungeon like bar, then with a motorcycle hanging in the front window and photo filled bar top in the back. I met a blind date there at like, 2am on a Friday night. I think I liked Asylum because it reminded me of the old Bidder's Suite in Richmond. Slightly dingy, dirty even. But good people. Fun times. Soon after the first visit, I started going to the fledgling vegan brunch, now a mainstay for DC vegans.

They'll likely remove the pool table and add seating by way of additional tables in order to increase capacity. There is a DJ booth downstairs, as well as a screen for projections. Don't expect to see bands, however. The sound system is located upstairs, as is the stage. Hopefully the specials like weekday happy hour and $0.50 beer on Saturdays continue. I will update when I get more information, but look for changes in late May and June of this year. Good luck to Asylum, it's one of the best bars on the 42 bus and I want it to stick around, even in its original form.

UPDATE: Prince of Petworth has more details here.

Show at La Casa This Friday

More good music on the 42 bus line this week.

Seattle's Mostly Dimes played La Casa almost exactly a year ago this week.  Last August they played as part of a benefit show on behalf of We Are Family.  Well, they're playing another benefit this year.  On August 20th (that's Friday) they'll play with DC's American Hearts and Order from Charlottesville.  This time for DC's Radio CPR 97.5 who also had a movie benefit last week at La Casa (3166 Mt Pleasant Street NW).  Show starts this Friday at 7:00pm.  If you're feeling generous and care to donate, bring $5.00.

Cool night of music at Asylum this Wednesday as well.  Killing You With Kindness is a DJ night featuring a lot of my favorite music from the 90s and 00s.  As a matter of fact, it will be spun by yours truly.  Good and so-bad-its-good hardcore and melodic bands. This Wednesday at 8:00pm.  2471 18th Street NW.  See you there.

Thanks for the tips folks.  If you know of any other shows on the 42 bus line, let me know: the42bus@gmail.com.

Parker Posey Movie Marathon at Asylum

Asylum Rock and Roll Lounge is putting on another cool movie night. The organizers of the Wes Anderson and John Hughes movie marathons are turning their attention to a single actor this time. No, not my all time favorite John Cusack. It's Parker Posey! My second favorite. Well, maybe third favorite after Joan Cusack.

Posey appears in so many films, I lost count trying to recall by memory. But Asylum is showing the best three: Best in Show, Party Girl and the pièce de résistance, The House of Yes. They'll be shown next Wednesday.

There could be an argument made for a few others to be included, particularly subUrbia and Drunks. But those were worthy movies that happen to include Posey. The three being shown are clearly the best of the films she's starred in. You will enjoy them all! And so will I. If you have been to these movie nights before, you know that the seats fill up fast and that you should not be jerky to the people sitting next to you at the bar (yes, I'm talking to you loud, random visitors from a state that shall remain nameless). The movies will be shown at the upstairs bar on three TVs and the one big pull down screen over the stairs.

The details:
Wednesday February 17
7:00PM Best in Show
8:45PM Party Girl
10:30PM The House of Yes (below)
Asylum 2471 18th Street NW

Video: Yula Be'eri in Adams Morgan

This show was just a lot of fun. I went on a recommendation of a friend and a quick myspace.com site check. I enjoyed the 30 seconds or so I heard of Yula Be'eri online and decided to head over to Asylum on Wednesday night to see for myself. This Brooklyn-based band took the stage shortly after 10:30pm, succeeding a DC band, Punch Drunk Poets. PDP played acoustic and I really dug them as well.

But Yula was amazing. Very much like a stripped down Gogol Bordello. Yula and her mates were only 3 strong, but switched instruments several times and had good stage presence and banter. Picked up a CD and left the bar in a tune. Doesn't happen often. Here's to better shows on the 42 bus route. If you know of a good upcoming show, please pass along the details to the42bus at gmail dot com.

John Hughes Film Series at Asylum

After the success of the Wes Anderson movie series, Asylum has decided to keep the summer of free movies going. This time, the movies of the late, great John Hughes will be the subject. He had quite a few hits, but Asylum will be showing those falling into the high school angst/coming of age genre. If you were born in the late 70s or early 80s, you should know these films very well.

Ed McNally's recent editorial on Hughes really made me laugh. And he mentioned a great quote from Hughes, via Ferris Beuller: "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Is that not the truth? Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Chicago couldn't have said it any better.

And who can top James Spader in a white linen suit, cold chillin, fake-smoking a cigarette in the stairwell of his high school. CLASSIC. The movies will be shown during the last week of August. Asylum is located at 2471 18t Street NW. The schedule:

Sunday, August 23
Free Double Feature Matinee 4:00PM
Sixteen Candles (John Cusack!)
The Breakfast Club (Molly Ringwald)

Tuesday, August 25
Free Double Feature 8:00PM
Weird Science (Kelly LeBrock)
Pretty in Pink (James Spader; clip below)

Thursday, August 27
Free 8:00PM
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (guy who married Sarah Jessica Parker)

Do You Zissou

After Rushmore, I figured Wes Anderson couldn't direct a better film. As far as I know, I'm right. The Royal Tenenbaums was fantastic, but couldn't best Max. I have yet to see The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou or The Darjeeling Limited. I didn't want to be disappointed.

Tonight may change that. Asylum Rock and Roll Lounge will show Life Aquatic, the fourth of five Anderson films, free at the upstairs bar. Last week there were some technical issues (the movie began more than 30 minutes late), but I've been assured that all has been corrected. Rumor is there will even be free popcorn tonight as well. It was PACKED last week. I had to knock an elderly lady out of her bar seat in order to get some food. No, I'm kidding. It was an AU summer student.

The movie begins at 8:00 (for real this time). There may even be a drinking game, for those so inclined. And that's water. A water drinking game. This is a family blog.

Sic transit gloria. Glory fades. I'm Max Fischer.

"My top schools where I want to apply to are Oxford and the Sorbonne. My safety's Harvard."

The second in a series of Wes Anderson movies, Rushmore, will be shown tonight at Asylum. Bottle Rocket was great, but Rushmore is the movie that put Anderson the map. My map anyway. In 1998 I identified with Max Fisher so much it was scary. Now, I think he's sort of a jerk. And really, who could resist falling for Olivia Williams. No one, that's who. She really is irresistible.

What's your favorite quote from the movie? And no, you can't use "O.R. they?," although that is pretty much the best line in the flick. 8:00pm sharp at 2471 18th Street NW.

Wes Anderson Film Series Starts Tonight @ Asylum

Asylum Rock and Roll Lounge in Adams Morgan has come up with a neat way pass the summer nights. Watching one of Wes Anderson's hilarious films. There is no cover and each movie will be shown on a big screen at the upstairs bar beginning at 8:00 PM. I'm a Wednesday regular, so perhaps see you there. Just don't bother me during the movie, ESPECIALLY during Rushmore. I will cut you. Just kidding. Tonight, Anderson's first full length, Bottle Rocket. A cult, if not a mainstream, classic. The full schedule:

July 8: Bottle Rocket (1996)
July 15: Rushmore (1998)
July 22: The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
July 29: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
August 5: The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
